Northern Command Military Hospital was established in 2014 after the Zambia Army had taken ownership (1991) of plot 8175 Daghammerskjoelds Drive in Itawa, formerly owned by Swap Spinning Mills Ltd. It was immediately commissioned as a common user health facility for military personnel, their immediate families, and the surrounding community. It is designated as a referral facility for all military health facilities in the northern region (Copperbelt, Northern, Northwestern, and Muchinga provinces). It was also designated as a referral health facility for Ndola District by the Ministry of Health.





Our Administration
The Hospital operates with three administrative functions, that is; Command, Clinical Services and Support Services. Command integrates the Hospital’s overall function as a military unit and healthcare facility. Clinical Services execute the healthcare function while Support Services integrate auxiliary services in support of healthcare and military functions.
The Commandant’s Office is the overall administrative and policy office of the Hospital. It serves as the link between the Hospital and all its stakeholders including the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Health, and all defense services, that is Zambia Army, Zambia Airforce, and Zambia National Service.
The Deputy Commandant’s Office provides technical leadership in the clinical services of the Hospital.
The Commanding Officer provides military leadership to the hospital as a military unit and manages the support services it requires.
The Hospital Administrator facilitates the administration of all non-military human resources of the hospital.
The Senior Nursing Officer manages the Hospital’s nursing care which includes a cadre of highly motivated caregivers in a wide range of nursing services including general, midwifery, theatre, public health, HIV, and other nursing specialties.
The Business Development Office manages the hospital’s clientele through efficient attention to account creation and pre-paid and post-paid billing. Our Maintenance office provides support services in the areas of electrical, mechanical, and biomedical equipment engineering.
The Quality Assurance Office provides continuous quality support on all the Hospital’s clinical functions through internal service audits and periodic analytical scanning.
Clinical Services
Led by the Deputy Commandant, clinical services are an array of services including the Outpatient Department, ambulatory specialist clinics, Fast Track Services, drug dispensaries, emergency services, and environmental health services.
Military Services
The Office Of The Commanding Officer articulates the day-to-day operation of military support in order to foster high standards of military norms and ethics of the hospital. Through its sub units, it looks at individual and collective discipline. The office coordinates staff welfare, training and personnel development in conjunction with clinical and nursing services. The office also provides catering services, procurement, storage and distribution of goods and services. Whenever possible, the office of the Commanding Officer also provides generalized community support through the participation of the Hospital in community initiatives and special events.
Support Services
In addition to the provision of administrative duties, the Hospital Administrator facilitates the appropriation and allocation of non-military personnel in coordination with the clinical and nursing services departments. This office also coordinates public relations and external liaison to ensure safety of staff and clients. The Hospital Administrator also enforces occupational health, safety and environmental standards.
